The most common reason a shop stays on paper is the size of the job it imagines: eight hundred customers, twelve years of entries, and no free evening to type them in. That job is not necessary, and shops that attempt it usually stop halfway.

• Keep the register where it is. Nothing gets thrown away. It stays on the shelf as the backup it has always been.
• Enter each customer as they return. A regular comes in for their next order — take the measurement on the phone instead of the page. It takes the same two minutes it always did.
• Let the busy customers arrive first. The people who come back most often are the ones whose measurements you look up most often, so the app fills itself in exactly the right order.
• Stop opening the register when it stops being needed. For most shops that is four to six weeks. Nobody decides the day; it just happens.

One thing is worth doing on purpose: when you enter a repeat customer, enter the measurement you would actually cut to today, not the one written three years ago. The register holds every version. The app should hold the current one.

A digital naap book is that same book on a phone. The naap sits against the customer's name rather than a page number, so it is found by typing two letters instead of turning pages while somebody waits. Every set is dated, so this year's numbers and last year's both survive and you can see which is which.

What it adds over paper is not features, it is recovery. A naap book that falls in water, or leaves with the person who wrote it, takes the shop's history with it. A digital one is still there on the next phone.
